Regions for Blu-ray standard Blu-ray discs may be encoded with a region code, intended to restrict the area of the world in which they can be played; similar to the DVD region codes. Blu-ray players sold in a certain region should only be able to play discs encoded for that region. The purpose of this system is to allow motion picture studios to control the various aspects of a release (including content, date, and, in particular, price) according to the region. Discs may also be produced without region coding, so they can be played on all devices
Blu-Ray Region A: North America, Central America, South America, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Southeast Asia
Blu-Ray Region B: Europe, Greenland, French territories, Middle East, Africa, Australia and New Zealand

New Cd and Dvd Technology -- Blu-Ray and Hd-Dvd

The compact disc has been around since 1978, developed by Phillips and Sony. The fancy it was developed was to take over for the Laserdisc as the commerce approved digital audio disc. Since its invention, we have seen many updates on the compact disc technology. The most up-to-date being the Cd-R and Dvd discs. With the Cd-R, you can now burn your own discs at home, and then modify those discs at a later date. Dvd technology allows us to report video onto a disc, where we used to only be able to report audio and data. As time rolls by, and the disc commerce advances, we are presented with new forms of these technologies. The two new contenders are Blu-Ray discs and Hd-Dvd, here's a minute facts about each of these new disc types.

1. Blu-Ray

Cd and Dvd Blu Ray Technology

This type of disc, also known as Blu-Ray Disc, is the next generation of visual disc. It was developed by the Blu-Ray Disc Association, a group of buyer electronic/Pc/media manufacturers, including: Apple, Hp, Mitsubishi, Phillips, Sony, and others. The Blu-Ray disc type was in general developed for recording, rewriting, and playing back high-definition (Hd) video. It's also perfect for storing large amounts of data, exceeding old Dvd-R disc storehouse capabilities. It can hold more than 5 times the number of facts that a customary Dvd can hold, up to 25Gb single layer, and up to 50Gb dual layer. One of the main differences of the Blu-Ray disc is the type of laser that the disc is read with. Normal Dvds are read with a red laser, the Blu-Ray discs are read with a blue-violet laser. The main benefit of this turn is the wave length of the laser types. The customary red laser has a wider focus, so the blue-violet laser can be focused more de facto allowing more tightly packed data. This equals more data in less space on the disc, this results in the further storehouse space available on the new Blu-Ray discs. These new discs are backwards compatible with quarterly Dvds, which they are expected to replace in the near future.
2. Hd-Dvd
Hd-Dvd discs, High Definition Versatile Discs or High Definition Digital Video Discs, are very similar to the Blu-Ray discs. This disc type is being developed by a group of buyer electronics/Pc companies, headed by Toshiba. They also use a blue-violet laser to read the contents of the disc, which results in an growth in storehouse capacity compared to Normal Dvd discs. The Hd-Dvd can store 15Gb single layer and 30Gb double layer, production their storehouse capacity 10Gb per layer smaller than the Blu-Ray. But Toshiba has announced a triple layer disc that can hold 45Gb of information, and the Hd Dvd discs can hold both Hd Dvd and quarterly Dvd facts on one disc.
Right now these two disc types are battling it out to become the next generation of Dvd disc technology, conjuring up images of the battle in the middle of Betamax and Vhs in the 80's. I guess we're all wondering who's going to come out on top? In my honest opinion, I believe that Blu-Ray will become the new standard. Both disc types offer Hd ability and large data storehouse capacity, so it's kind of hard to say which is better. The Blu-Ray, with its greater maximum storehouse capacity and the fact that it's being backed by more of the large buyer electronic/Pc/media manufacturers, I believe will win the battle. But it's all still up in the air, so only time will tell.

Sony DVP-SR500H 1080p Upscaling DVD Player (Electronics) : The Sony DVP-SR300H 1080p Up-scaling DVD Player is one fantastic machine. I just received the Sony DVD player today and I set it up immediately after the UPS carrier handed it over to me. But I didn't like the start-up and reference guides because, because they do not explain how to set up the machine thoroughly, in my opinion. I had a difficult time understanding the instructions in the guides. Once I got the machine started, it worked like a gem. I agree with the other 59 reviewers before me, who gave this Sony DVD player 5 stars. Every positive comment that was said about this machine turned out to be true. The images on the HDTV screen are clear and the colors are vivid. Some of the reviewers said the images shown on the screen is like that of a Blu Ray player. I've never seen an image produced by a Blu Ray player, but I'll take their word for it. The HDTV is an RCA 32" LCD HDTV (model no. 32LA30RQ), and it belongs to my mother. The DVD player was a gift to her, by the way. The lack of an eject button on the remote control was not a problem for me though. This is a marvelous machine. I would recommend it to anyone. The only thing I didn't like was how the instructions for setting up the machine in the reference/start-up guides were written.

It is awesome. I enjoy the blu-ry 3D compatability with my TV. being able to set the output to the checker board format for my Mitsubishi enabled me to get 3D without buying the expensive kit. This has been my favorite purchase of the year. I bought it mainly for it's media programs (youtube, netflix, etc.) and I have to say I'm freaking impressed. It loads DVDs almost immediately and it does upgrade everything to HD quality, which I'm in love with. I never knew my tv could show images so clearly until i got this. I don't know what else I can say about this except this has got to be the best blu ray player of the year and Amazon has it at the cheapest price available. It also upgrade firmware regularly so if it's missing any media programs it'll probably have somewhere in the near future. The only thing I wish it had is a slot loading drive, but it's not even all that serious to me so I really don't care  5 stars!

Understanding different Dvd formats is key to burning Dvd's at home and production sure that the complete stock will play on the devices you want them to. While Dvd-video is a term often used to define a movie, such as a rental of the newest blockbuster, in actuality there are any different formats of Dvd disks that need to be understood and the drives that burn them in order to get the desired results when burning Dvd's at home.

Different Dvd Formats:

Dvd Technology

Dvd's look like Cd's all though they are quite different as they hold about 7 times more facts than Cd's that allows an whole movie to be burned onto one Dvd.
1. Dvd-R and Dvd+R. These are video disk recording formats that allow for one recording only, once recorded to they cannot be edited, erased or changed in any way, they are locked for life. This type of disk is compatible with all Dvd players, even older ones.
2. Dvd+Rw, Dvd-Rw and Dvd-RaM. These Dvd formats allow rewrites. They can be recorded with information, erased, and recorded again. These type of disks commonly only play newer Dvd players only and not older players. Make sure check your Dvd player specs to see what formats are compatible.
Main disagreement between the different Dvd Formats:
a) Dvd-R, Dvd+R, Dvd+Rw and Dvd-Rw are made for recording movies and video.
b) Dvd-Ram disks were created for backing up computer data and hard drives and not for burning Dvd's. Most Dvd players cannot read or play Dvd-Ram disks.
Plus and Minuses Attached to the different Dvd formats:
The plus and minus signs mean nothing really. Years ago when Dvds were first being made there was no manufactures acceptable and different companies were production different forms of Dvds hoping that their single Dvd type would come to be the main one used.
Dvd-R and Dvd-Rw disks were made by Pioneer and data was only written to one layer of the Dvds surface. Other companies supported Dvd+R and Dvd+Rw and as opposed to the '-' disks, the '+' disks had data stored on multiple layers of the disk. The plus and minus sign does not matter in which Dvd format you use, they are basically the same thing.

Different Dvd Format Drives
The Dvd drive is a component of a computer that categorically records data or movie onto the Dvd disc. The different types of Dvd drives basically break down into the same formats as the different Dvd formats. There are Dvd-Ram drives, Dvd-R drives etc. It is leading to match the different Dvd formats with the burning capabilities of the Dvd drives.
When selecting a Dvd Drive think what you will use it for. If you are primarily going to back up computer data then it is best to choose a Dvd-Ram burner, but if you are burning movies then you will have to choose one of the Dvd drives. These days many Dvd drives are compatible with any Dvd formats and so the more options you get with your drive the more flexible it will be.
In the end all things needs to match. Make sure that your Dvd media, Dvd drive and your playing device's capabilities are compatible for the best digital video experience.

Sony BDP-S480 Blu-ray Disc Player (Black) (Electronics)  is excellent no-frills Blu-ray player and best bang-for-the-buck Blu-ray player for 2011. If you have a wired setup, this is a great player. In fact, the wired versions do a much better job at streaming video. I have been able to stream 1080p HDX picture from Vudu at 9 MBps with no problems. I actually really like the Sony menu structure and I have to say their interface is faster than that on my Panasonic plasma.

I have one minor complaint: I have yet to be able to stream Dolby 5.1 via the digital output (it converts to PCM Dolby 2.0). I have heard this is possible on some new players, but I haven't yet made it work.

The Blu-ray picture quality is simply stunning. Well-done Sony!

Great  Price , Great Player Pioneer DV 610AV-K - DVD player - upscaling - black (Electronics) Works as Advertised ! Have only watched one or two movies on this and was perfectly satisfied with the picture and sound. Fact is, I have a Panasonic DVD player that is use for that purpose. I bought the Pioneer DV-610AV simply for the Audio. More specifically, to be able to play SACD's and DVD Audio discs. It has surpassed all of my expectations as a High Resolution Audio Player. I was late getting to the game, but it has been worth every penny once I arrived. The discs are getting hard to find because most were made before 2008. Between Amazon and eBay, I have built a pretty good collection, albeit expensive. The one disc that everyone needs to own, regardless of taste, is the SACD of Dark Side of The Moon. New copies can still be purchased at Best Buy and Fry's for standard retail prices of $15. It is the one disc that you will use everytime you go to show off your system. The Pioneer DV-610AV has played every disc I've thrown at it perfectly. Many of the discs I've bought are only available used and some were abused. Again, the Pioneer tracked every one without a hiccup. The remote that comes with the DV-610AV is adequate but nothing to brag about. Small buttons, small script on a black remote. I consider myself to be an educated shopper. I do my homework. I did not find anything out there that comes close to the capabilites of the Pioneer DV-610AV for anywhere near it's $100 price tag. It is a sleeping giant. Grab one while you can.

Selecting a Blu-Ray Player

If you feel you are ready to buy a Blu-ray player then it is well worth spending a wee time getting to understand the basic Blu-ray features and terms. There are subtle differences in the middle of players and it's best to know what you're seeing for.

Blu-ray is the acceptable high definition (Hd) format now adopted by the whole domestic movie market. High definition means that the picture you see is at a far higher resolution than the older Dvd standard.

Region-free DVD Bluray Player

Dvd (Ntsc) acceptable resolution is 720 pixels across by 480 pixels down the screen.
Dvd (Pal) acceptable resolution is 720 pixels across by 576 pixels down the screen.
Blu-ray 1080i and 1080p refers to the best vertical resolution that Blu-ray provides which is 1080 pixels down and 1920 pixels across.
Most current Lcd and plasma Tvs will display the full Blu-ray resolution but it is best the make sure that your Tv can achieve this. Firstly your Tv must have an Hdmi socket on the back and secondly check the user hand-operated for reference to 1080i or 1080p. If whether is missing you probably won't be able to achieve full Blu-ray resolution. Hdmi is the connection down which the Hd video and audio is transmitted.
That's the basics of Hd explained, now for the more subtle differences in the middle of Blu-ray players.
Upscaling to 1080p via Hdmi means that you are playing a lower resolution media like Dvd on a Blu-ray player which is then scaled up to the 1080 resolution. The picture is slightly good than the customary Dvd if it were played through a Dvd player but doesn't reach full Blu-ray clarity.
As with Dvd players, there are regions that players will cover. Dvd uses regions 1 to 8 and 0 is region free.
Blu-ray uses regions A, B and C.
Region A: North and South America, South and South East Asia, including Japan, Korea and Malaysia.
Region B: Europe, Australiia, New Zealand, Africa, Middle East and Greenland.
Region C: Central and South of Asia including China; Russica and Mongolia.
Virtually all Blu-ray players have online functionality. This is provided whether through a Lan or Wi-Fi interface to your internet router. Internet connectivity is thoroughly elective as it is not always convenient to connect. I have yet to try a international DVD but my Mom is sending me some German DVD's for my kids so i will leave some feedback after i try them out.
I also love that this DVD player has a memory. It will recognize a DVD that was played before and then skip right through everything so we can watch the movie. Great feature!!
